Manchester United told how to get the best out of James Garner next season

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes James Garner would benefit from spending another season on loan at Nottingham Forest following their recent promotion to the Premier League.

Garner, who is expected to be closely analysed by Erik ten Hag over pre-season, played a key role in helping Forest end their 23-year exile from the top flight of English football, as they beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Sunday. The academy graduate provided the assist for the only goal of the game, seeing his cross turned in by Huddersfield defender Levi Colwill for an own-goal.

The Birkenhead-born ace was excellent at Wembley, just as he had been throughout the season. He was a consistent starter under Steve Cooper and played a key role in helping Forest climb from the bottom of the table to promotion.

His showings frequently attracted praise from United supporters from afar, who are now determined to see him installed in Ten Hag's plans for next season. However, Parker, who played for United between 1991 and 1996, believes Garner would be better off spending another season with Forest, earning regular Premier League football.
