Manchester United surprised by Luke Shaw injury setback

Manchester United are surprised by the setback Luke Shaw has encountered six-and-a-half years ago on from suffering a double leg break.

Shaw is due to have two screws removed on Saturday, a procedure interim manager Ralf Rangnick expects will rule out the left-back for up to three weeks.

The England international sustained a double leg fracture in United's September 2015 Champions League group stage defeat at PSV Eindhoven and Shaw was operated on in the Netherlands. The 26-year-old revealed in 2018 that if he had flown back to Manchester he could have lost his leg because of blood clots.

Shaw was forced off at half-time in United's 1-1 draw with Leicester last week and, as well as Saturday's trip to Everton, he is set to miss the upcoming home fixture against Norwich and away games at Liverpool and Arsenal.

"To me, it came quite unexpectedly, to be honest, and the same is true of our medical department," United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said. "He told me in the international break when he was with the England squad that he had some problems there and he played against Leicester and five minutes before half-time he had an issue and had to be treated on the pitch.

"And at half time, the doctor came to see me and said he could not continue and since then we have been discussing what is best and they decided to have the two bolts removed."

Shaw is one of four notable absentees at Goodison Park, with Edinson Cavani joined by Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay on the sidelines. United have not won three successive games all season and are under immense pressure to take six points off Everton and Norwich - two clubs in the bottom four - ahead of the match at Anfield on Tuesday
