Manchester United summer exodus will begin with multiple squad departures

There were over 10 permanent departures from Manchester United last summer and that list included some high-profile players.

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira all headed for the exit door at Old Trafford and they were followed by the likes of Tahith Chong, Reece Devine, James Garner, Dylan Levitt and Martin Svidersky.

After the worst season at the club for decades, a squad overhaul was necessary, but Erik ten Hag will continue that overhaul this summer, as he moulds the dressing room further into his vision in preparation for his second year.

Ten Hag will look to sell players to increase his transfer budget. United have struggled to recoup any significant fees in the transfer market over the years, although it's thought around £100million could be raised from departures.

To begin with, though, there are five players who are set to leave the club upon the expiry of their deals, which will add room to the wage bill. Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones are both surplus to requirements and it's remarkable they've lasted this long.

Ethan Galbraith, currently on loan at League Two side and Class of '92 owned Salford, has also been informed he will be let go following the expiration of his contract, whilst Ondrej Mastny and Charlie Wellens are in the same situation.

Wellens played his last game for United against Blackpool in a friendly last week. It's understood the versatile full-back trialled with Barnsley's Under-21s in January and he's known for months his time in United's academy is coming to an end.
