Manchester United suffer injury blow ahead of pre-season tour

Manchester United defender Will Fish could miss out on a place on their pre-season tour due to injury.

Fish, who started against Rosenborg, is understood to have sustained a foot injury in the pre-season friendly defeat to Rosenborg in Norway on Monday. The 21-year-old avoided a break but suffered severe bruising and he will be assessed over the coming days.

United manager Erik ten Hag questioned some of the rumbustious tackling by Rosenborg players in the first half of their 1-0 win.

"I think there were many bad tackles first half," Ten Hag said. "They stopped really big opportunities when we went in counter attacks and got some big knocks. But as I see it now, they will recover for training tomorrow."

United play Rangers in Edinburgh in their second friendly on Saturday before flying to Los Angeles for their three-game tour on Wednesday.

Fish has spent the last two years on loan in Edinburgh with Hibernian and he is now attracting interest from Championship clubs. The academy graduate's United contract expires next year.

Ten Hag added Fish to his first tour squad in 2022 and he was sent off against Crystal Palace in Melbourne. The Stockport-born centre half captained an academy XI in their 3-1 loss to Wrexham in San Diego last July.

New United signing Leny Yoro is available for immediate selection as he was not named in the France squad for the Olympic Games in Paris later this month.

Ten Hag has a healthier quota of centre halves available, with Harry Maguire nearing a return from a muscle injury and Jonny Evans under contract again.
