Manchester United striker signing could rely on £100m sale

It was important that Manchester United put an end to their pursuit of Mason Mount one way or another this week.

United are pleased they have been able to sign a top target for what they feel is a reasonable fee so early in the window, with Mount set to be part of the squad for the bulk of their pre-season plans.

He not only addresses a key area of the squad, but his signing means that Erik ten Hag now has a much clearer idea as he looks to push ahead with other aspects of his summer rebuild.

It has been well documented that there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding United's transfer plans, given that so much of it could rely on a successful takeover or player sales.

That picture is at least a little bit clearer now. United's transfer budget will be limited by Financial Fair Play restrictions, but they have still been able to commit £55million to the addition of Mount.

It had been suggested that United could have somewhere between £100m-£150m to spend this summer, though in order to be able to do that, they would need to sell players in order to comply with those FFP rules.

United's deal for Mount could therefore reduce such a budget to between £45m-£95m as they go in search of a striker and a goalkeeper, and it could be reduced even further if they end up pursuing a move for Inter ace Andre Onana.

It has been reported that Inter will demand €50million plus add-ons if they are to sell Onana this summer, which, if correct, would mean another initial output of £43million for United.

If you take that into account alongside the previous estimates, then United could wipe out their lower estimated budget on deals for Mount and Onana or be left with around £40m
