Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes explains why he is relishing Leeds fixture

Bruno Fernandes is relishing the experience of playing inside a packed-out Elland Road when Manchester United lock horns with rivals Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Due to last season's Covid-19 restrictions, United's first league visit to Elland Road since 2003, which ended goalless, was played behind closed doors, meaning Fernandes, like the rest of his team-mates, was unable to experience a full-bloodied Leeds showdown.

Fernandes made his mark when the two sides met on the opening day of this season, scoring a hat-trick in front of a sell-out Old Trafford crowd, as United romped their way to a 5-1 win.

However, Sunday's meeting in West Yorkshire promises to have a very different feel to it, with Leeds' supporters renowned for making Elland Road an intimidating and hostile environment for any opposing team, not least United.

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star, who ended his five-game run without a goal against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday, is looking forward to the occasion.

"Yes, already last season, without fans, people were telling me about that," Fernandes told United's club website. "My team-mates were saying that this is a tough place to be as a Manchester United player but I like that kind of atmosphere.

"I like when everything is against you because it makes you give a little bit more and be a little bit better.

"You also know the fans will be there for you, to make them be proud of you and give something back to them because they will go there to support us, for sure."

Clashes against Leeds rank high up on United's list of must-win games, meaning Fernandes is fully aware of how important this fixture is to the supporters.
