Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes breaks Champions League record set by David Beckham

Bruno Fernandes created history in the Champions League when passing a record previously held by Manchester United great David Beckham.

With a spot in the quarter-finals at stake, United were last night stunned with just seven minutes on the clock at the fearsome Wanda Metropolitano last night.

Joao Felix nodded home the opener for Atletico Madrid and, for large parts, United struggled to create any clear-cut openings in their search for an equaliser.

That was until Fernandes and Anthony Elanga combined in the final stages.

Despite not enjoying one of his best outings in a United shirt, it was the Portuguese sensation who conjured up a pin-point pass for Elanga to finish.

It was an 80th-minute strike which means the tie is evenly poised heading into the second leg.

Fernandes played an important part in the leveller and, in doing so, the United playmaker went past a record that was set by Beckham during his time at Old Trafford.

Back in 1998, the former England captain provided assists in five straight Champions League games.

That has since stood as a competition-high for any player representing a Premier League club, but Fernandes now owns that particular honour after offering a supply line in his sixth straight match in Europe.
