Manchester United stance on possible Raheem Sterling move

Manchester United are wary of making an approach for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling despite the winger's interest in joining the club.

Sterling, 30, would be open to a move to United if Juventus fail to progress with a deal for Jadon Sancho.

A possible swap involving England internationals Sancho and Sterling has been touted with United keen to sell the former while the latter was stripped of the number seven at Chelsea.

Sancho earns around £250,000-a-week, which will have reduced following United's failure to qualify for the Champions League. Sterling is on a £325,000 weekly salary at Chelsea, which would leave United worse off under the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

United have stressed they would only be prepared to do deals that would aid their profitability and sustainability calculations for next year. United also have two wingers on the right and left-hand sides, with Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount also options on the right.

Chelsea want to sell Sterling after he was left out of their opening game of the season against Manchester City. The winger's representatives published a statement before kick-off seeking "clarity" on his role and Sterling is now training away from the first team squad.

Sterling grew up supporting United and has remarkably never scored against them in 26 appearances for Liverpool, City and Chelsea.
