Manchester United stance on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford futures in transfer window

Manchester United are braced for the prospect of Anthony Martial still being at the club next season due to the lack of offers for the forward.

Martial, 26, has scored eight goals for United in the last two seasons and flopped during a four-month loan spell with Sevilla this year.

Sources say "nobody is breaking the door down" to sign Martial after a campaign where he managed two club goals and four starts for United.

Figures at United are more optimistic about Marcus Rashford's resurgence and sources close to the player insist he is "raring to go" ahead of the new season.

Martial is contracted to the club until 2024 but he is their fourth-choice left winger behind Jadon Sancho, Rashford and Anthony Elanga.

United are in discussions to extend the contract of teenage forward Alejandro Garnacho, potent from the left-hand side, and Hannibal Mejbri made his full debut in that role against Crystal Palace last month.

United also intend to sign a forward to balance out the attack and ease the goalscoring burden on Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite an impressive 23-goal haul in 2019-20, Martial has failed to vindicate his reclaiming of the number nine shirt three years ago.

New United manager Erik ten Hag accepts he may have to utilise Martial in some capacity if the France international is marooned at Old Trafford.

France coach Didier Deschamps dropped Martial from his squad last season and he is unlikely to get fulfilling playing time at United to force his way back into the fold for the World Cup in November.
