Manchester United shirt numbers available for Mount, Hojlund and other potential summer signings

It's set to be another exciting if expensive summer for Manchester United.

Though the season ended with heartbreak after defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, United can still be proud of the progress made over the past year under Erik ten Hag. But if they are to close the gap on their neighbours then big improvements in the squad are required.

A promising start has been made with United agreeing terms with Chelsea star Mason Mount and Ten Hag holding talks with Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund. Another midfielder, goalkeeper, centre-back and right-back are on the to-do list as well.

With a lot of fresh faces expected through the Old Trafford doors, here are the squad numbers currently available to any new signings.

No.4 - For the first time since 2011, the No.4 will be available at Old Trafford this summer as Phil Jones' 12-year stay with the club is coming to an end upon the expiration of his contract. The number has previously been worn by midfielders Owen Hargreaves and Juan Sebastien Veron but is also synonymous with centre-backs and might be eyed up by Raphael Varane, who wore it for France.

No.7 - The famous No.7 has been cursed since Cristiano Ronaldo first left in 2009, so much so that the Portuguese star didn't fare too well in it upon his return. Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez have all struggled with the mantle over the years, with Edinson Cavani the only exception. But now the jersey is free for someone else to attempt to live up to the legend, whether it's a new signing, Jadon Sancho or Alejandro Garnacho.
