Manchester United set to release five players

Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are expected to be among the Manchester United players released in the summer.

Jones, 31, has started two games in three years due to a knee problem while fellow centre-back Tuanzebe, 25, has not played for United since the Europa League final in 2021.

Jones has not trained all season and was last visible in a session at Carrington on May 20. He has started 16 times since signing a new contract in February 2019 and was substituted at half-time in five of them.

Tuanzebe suffered another injury-plagued year in 2022 and has just finished a four-month loan with Stoke City in the Championship, where he played only five times. Tuanzebe's brother and representative, Dimitri, was at United's Carrington training complex last month to seek clarification on his future.

Northern Ireland midfielder Ethan Galbraith, currently on loan at League Two side Salford, has been informed he will be let go at the end of his contract. Galbraith's only senior United appearance was against Astana in the Europa League group stage in November 2019.

Academy goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny and Charlie Wellens are also likely to be let go after short loans with Portadown and Oldham Athletic. Spanish striker Mateo Mejia's future is also uncertain.

United must decide whether to extend the contract of number two goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who has recently resumed full training after a foot injury.

Nathan Bishop, a reserve 'keeper United signed from Southend United in January 2020, is also approaching the final month of his deal. Bishop, 23, has never played for United.
