Manchester United set to release five players as Marcel Sabitzer suffers injury blow

Five players set to be released

Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are expected to be among the Manchester United players released in the summer.

Jones, 31, has started two games in three years due to a knee problem while fellow centre-back Tuanzebe, 25, has not played for United since the Europa League final in 2021.

Jones has started 16 times since signing a new contract in February 2019 and was substituted at half-time in five of them.

Tuanzebe suffered another injury-plagued year in 2022 and has just finished a four-month loan with Stoke City in the Championship, where he played only five times. Tuanzebe's brother and representative, Dimitri, was at United's Carrington training complex last month to seek clarification on his future.

Sabitzer injury blow

United will be without Marcel Sabitzer for their final three Premier League games of the season and the FA Cup final after the midfielder suffered a knee injury.

The 29-year-old was ruled out of the win against Wolves on Saturday and further tests have revealed a meniscus problem that will keep him sidelined for the remainder of his loan spell.

United are now in discussions with Bayern Munich over Sabitzer's rehabilitation and it is understood no decision has yet been made over his long-term future.

There was no option to buy included in the loan deal for Sabitzer, which was concluded on deadline day in the January transfer window after Christian Eriksen suffered an ankle injury.
