Manchester United sent sensible goalkeeper message amid David de Gea concerns

Former striker Teddy Sheringham believes Manchester United should consider keeping their options open when it comes to the possibility of recruiting a new goalkeeper this summer.

United, who missed out on the opportunity to tighten their grip on a top four berth on Thursday night, losing 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, have some potentially big decisions to make in the goalkeeping department this summer. They remain in talks with David de Gea about extending his stay at the club and hope to have his new deal in place before his existing one expires at the end of June.

Uncertainty continues to surround Dean Henderson's future at Old Trafford and he could be moved on this summer, but a fresh injury setback could threaten to scupper a potential exit for the current Nottingham Forest loanee. Jack Butland, too, will leave the club when his loan expires at the end of the season.

Much of the focus surrounding the goalkeeping situation, however, concerns De Gea and whether or not he is the right candidate to continue as the club's first choice shot-stopper. Despite racking up 23 clean sheets in all competitions this season, question marks continue to surround his suitability to Erik ten Hag's long-term plans because of his struggles in possession.

He was heavily criticised after United's 3-0 defeat to Sevilla last month, prompting questions of whether the club should prioritise the addition of a new first choice goalkeeper this summer. Sheringham believes that is something United may wish to consider, but warns they should only act if they can source the right player, opposed to rushing into a decision for the sake of it.
