Manchester United sent Erik ten Hag warning as Mark Hughes backs Mauricio Pochettino

Mark Hughes has sent Manchester United a warning over hiring Erik ten Hag to take over the club.

Manchester Evening News understands that Ten Hag was interviewed for the United job this week while it is also believed that the current Ajax man is the favourite among the Reds board for the role. MEN Sport believes that they have not ruled out other managers just yet with Mauricio Pochettino being considered as a potential alternative.

Hughes, who has spent time managing the likes of Manchester City, Stoke City and Southampton in the Premier League, has warned his former club about appointing a manager with minimal experience in the league. He told Sky Sports: "Premier League is like no other league in world football.

"It has similarities, obviously, with the quality of the play but I just think the intensity of the games is different and if you have no experience, albeit either as a player or as a manager I think it can take you aback. You can have periods of transition where you are not quite sure what is going [on] or what's hit you because it's such a different level.

"You can see the attraction of Pochettino coming in because he knows the Premier League and the strength of it. There is examples of other coaches, from other countries, come in and hit the ground running."

Hughes was appointed as manager of Bradford City in February in a move that shocked English football. Life in League Two has not been plain sailing though, in his first five games he has won two and lost three.
