Defence with a difference

It was certain there would be one change in Manchester United's defence given Luke Shaw's injury absence; not many people were expecting there to be three, though.

Harry Maguire came in for Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka started at right-back as Ten Hag looked to freshen up his backline after a busy week of action.

The experiment largely paid off, with Wan-Bissaka impressive on his return to the side, while Maguire did enough but did not exactly catch the eye.

It wasn't the same for Malacia though, who was a noticeable downgrade on Shaw and had a day to forget. They must hope that the England international is back before they are made to miss him again.

United's biggest problem was summed up in the opening 12 minutes

United could have scored five times in the opening 12 minutes of the match, but somehow failed to do so on every occasion. First, there was a botched three-on-one on the break that faded into nothing, and moments later, Rashford fired close to Pickford when played through on goal.

Antony failed to pick out Rashford when he raced through on goal, and from the resulting corner, the Brazilian's brilliant effort cannoned off the post before Aaron Wan-Bissaka somehow dragged the rebound wide of an open goal.

United had 21 shots in the first-half against Everton, their most on record (since 2003-04) in the first half of a single Premier League game, and the most by any side in the opening 45 minutes of a match this season. Yet it was only enough for them to find the back of the net once.
