Manchester United's £80m transfer decision could give Marcus Rashford new role in dressing room

Manchester United fans protested against the Glazers on Monday night. It was estimated around 10,000 supporters descended onto Old Trafford before the Liverpool match and they began that impressive march at 7pm after gathering at The Tollgate pub.

The start time of the march coincided with the team news for both sides being announced. Among the anti-Glazer noise and thick green and gold smoke, some protestors were checking their phones to see which starting lineup Erik ten Hag had selected.

The Manchester Evening News had revealed Ten Hag was considering dropping Harry Maguire ahead of the game and the centre-back was duly named on the bench. Although that wasn't a surprise, Ten Hag naming Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench certainly was.

Jadon Sancho started on the right, Anthony Elanga started on the left and Marcus Rashford started down the middle. Ten Hag was brave to drop Ronaldo, but the decision proved to be a masterstroke with United looking devastating on the counter-attack.

The front three were interchangeable, dynamic and fluid, just like they were in pre-season and they asked questions of Liverpool's defence with transitions. United looked like a different side and it felt like Ten Hag's philosophy had finally arrived.

Although Anthony Martial entered the field for Elanga at half-time, which meant Rashford played in his preferred position of left-wing during the second half, the academy graduate still had a productive first 45 minutes playing down the middle.
