Manchester United remove link to buy shirts from Twitter bio after backlash from supporters
Manchester United’s social media team removed a link to buy shirts from the club’s Twitter bio after a backlash from supporters, who accused the Red Devils of only caring about money.
Supporters hit out at the club following Sunday’s defeat to arch rivals Manchester City, when fans noticed that United’s bio included a link to buy the side’s home and away shirts at a discount.
It was in stark contrast to the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and City, who all opted to have club honours and recent trophies in their bios.
For many, it encapsulated the accusation that United care more about matters off the field than on it – particularly after they’d just been battered by Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad.
United have spent around £1.2bn since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement but that’s seen a return of just three trophies, while City have dominated the Premier League, and both Liverpool and Chelsea have won the Champions League.
Supporters have long accused the club of caring more about the club from a business perspective, particularly after United tried to join the European Super League.
And fans were quick to criticise the social media team on Sunday when they realised the difference between United’s bio and that of their rivals.
But, after raising the issue, United’s social media team were quick to take the link down.
<p lang=«en» dir=«ltr» xml:lang=«en»>….aaaand they took the shirt sales link down. Just shows the power us fans hold when we stand for something together. They are scared of us. They are scared of losing money.
