Manchester United players were motivated to beat Sheffield United by Sir Bobby Charlton

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says the news of Sir Bobby Charlton's death inspired some of the players to beat Sheffield United.

Charlton passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday. His battle with dementia was made public in November 2020.

United recorded their second successive Premier League win of the season with a 2-1 triumph at Bramall Lane, where Diogo Dalot's long-range strike settled a scrappy contest.

"The first-half wasn't the standard [of] Sir Bobby Charlton," Ten Hag stressed, "the second half was a bit better.

"The news arrived and we are very sad. Our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife, Lady Norma, his children, his grandchildren.

"He was a legend, a giant. His achievements are so immense and huge - global. If you see the facts, what he achieved is incredible, all his games, titles, trophies, the contribution he had with the goals.

"I never had the honour to meet him but what I heard was, in spite of all his trophies and games, he was so humble and eager, a big personality. He's an example for all of us in football, society and global wide.

"I heard some players got inspiration from it, they wanted a win to mark it, so it was an extra motivation, absolutely.

"First half was not a good game. It was a poor game [on] our sides, you see it often after an international, but especially with us, with so many changes, every time with line-ups, the routines are not there.
