Manchester United player ratings: Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba good vs Middlesbrough

Dean Henderson

Had next to nothing to do in the first-half but superbly denied Matt Crooks early in the second at 1-0. Huge save from Aaron Connolly late in extra-time. Not good in the shootout. 6

Diogo Dalot

Supportive in attack as he continued his consistent form in the opposition half but he was nowhere to be seen when Matt Crooks scored. 6

Raphael Varane

Nigh-on flawless in the first-half, which reinforced how much more secure United are with Varane. Inexplicably went walkabout for the equaliser. 7

Harry Maguire

A stable performance next to Varane for an hour but once the game became stretched he was uncomfortable. Converted spotkick coolly. 6

Luke Shaw

An improved performance on his return to the side and sharp from the off but he looked visibly fatigued in extra-time. 6

Scott McTominay

Alert at the base of midfield and still managed to break forward when United were dominant but became sloppy as anxiety crept in. 6

Paul Pogba

Pogba usually returns from lay-offs impressively and this was no exception. Incisive on the ball and eager off it, he won the penalty. Substituted late on. 7

Bruno Fernandes

Middlesbrough could not work out Fernandes' darting runs and his productiveness was unmatched on the pitch. But he missed two easy chances. 7

Jadon Sancho

Almost scored with an audacious chip and then procured the breakthrough on an uplifting return to the side. One of United's most consistent attackers. 7

Marcus Rashford

Bright and had a goal disallowed for offside when he could have got on in the first-half. Also failed to take a good chance in the second. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo

His overhead kick drew applause but he squandered the easier chance from the penalty spot. Denied in a one-on-one. 5

Subs

Fred

Really good impact
