Manchester United owners the Glazers exploring 'takeover' of Indian football club

Manchester United are looking into the possibility of taking over an Indian football club according to a former cricketer who is facilitating the deal.

Ex-India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has told the Telegraph in India that United are interested in purchasing East Bengal who play in the Indian Super League. When asked by the Indian newspaper whether United were hoping to come on board as investors, Ganguly said: "No, no (they are coming) as an owner.

"It takes some time. First, let it reach a stage then we will make a comment.

"I will speak only after there's a concrete development." East Bengal finished ninth in their league last season, a disappointing result which has led to them searching for new owners.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Manchester United were looking to form their own cricket team in the United Arab Emirates. However, MEN Sport understands that the Reds had no plans to establish their own club in the Middle East.

United are owned by the Glazers and their ownership has been a problem for fans. Asked this week about Erik ten Hag's appointment as manager, co-owner Avram Glazer said: "That’s why we hired him. He'll do a great job."
