Manchester United offer deal to Christian Eriksen

Manchester United have made an offer to Christian Eriksen as the playmaker weighs up his options this summer only a year after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 game against Finland.

Tottenham, Eriksen’s former club, and Newcastle are also interested in signing the 30 year-old, who is available on a free transfer with his short term contract with Brentford due to expire at the end of the month.

Brentford have been eager to extend Eriksen’s stay given his dramatic impact at the club during the final three months of last season, when they won seven of the 10 Premier League games in which he started, and have not given up hope of convincing him to sign a new deal.

Eriksen admitted he would like to play in the Champions League again, which would play into Tottenham’s hands, but said it was not a dealbreaker and that he was in no rush to make a decision over his future. “I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision,” he told Viaplay. “I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is but it isn’t essential for me.”

The prospect of staying in London, where his family are settled, is also thought to appeal but it remains to be seen how hard United push for a player who has made a remarkable recovery since his collapse at the Euros last June.

United have prioritised a deal for Frenkie de Jong, with the club in talks with Barcelona for the Holland midfielder, whom Erik ten Hag is desperate to reunite with after a successful spell together at Ajax.

It is not yet clear whether Eriksen is only a fall back option in the event an agreement cannot be reached with Barcelona over De Jong or whether manager Ten Hag is pushing for both players
