Manchester United must give James Garner what he deserves amid transfer decision

News that Manchester United are prepared to sell James Garner before the transfer window closes was never going to go down well.

However, United, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, have made the decision to cash in on the highly-rated 21-year-old, much to everyone's bemusement. He excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest last season and produced a catalogue of polished performances.

Not only did he play a formidable role in helping them earn promotion from the Championship, ending their 23-year exile from the Premier League, he also helped them reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, producing eye-catching displays against Arsenal, Leicester City and Liverpool. He did not look one bit out of place.

His performances last season meant that almost everyone was under the impression that he had earnt the chance to impress back at United under Erik ten Hag, a manager who is renowned for developing young talent and unearthing massive potential. Garner, however, has not been so lucky, failing to step off the bench in either of United's opening two Premier League outings.

It is, though, important to remember that he struggled for minutes in pre-season because of an injury problem he sustained during the tour of Thailand and Australia. He only featured once during that period, coming on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Nevertheless, with United's midfield problems yet to be resolved, and Garner having shone brightly at Forest last term, he was worthy of getting a chance to prove his worth at this level. Instead, United have made the decision to cash in on him.
