Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson United have won 25 of their 55 games in the Champions League. If they fail to progress tonight it would be the third time in seven campaigns in this competition they've not got out of the group stages.

It is a miserable record and shows what they are up against. Bayern are European royalty who rarely throw in complete disasters in the Champions League. United, not so much.

In this competition, in terms of European giants, they have had group stage wins against Juventus and Paris St-Germain and that highwater mark of the win in Paris under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They did Barcelona at Old Trafford in the Europa League last season, but it's thin gruel for iconic wins in Europe's premier competition.

The wins against Juventus and against PSG in the last-16 came away from home, so famous nights at Old Trafford in the last decade really are few and far between. Wins against Bayern Leverkusen, Atalanta and PSG in the group stage and the 2014 comeback against Olympiakos are as good as it gets. That last game is arguably the only must-win, do-or-die Champions League game they've won at home in a decade.

So for United to win at home against Bayern in the Champions League when they really need to get a result would be a surprise on recent evidence, but Erik ten Hag's side really need to step up to the plate at some point this season.
