Manchester United might not need Antony signing amid firm Ajax stance

Some Manchester United fans may feel slightly frustrated by the club’s inability to claw Antony away from Ajax so far this summer.

Erik ten Hag has already sealed a reunion with former Ajax protégé Lisandro Martinez at United, with terms agreed for the defender. But new Ajax boss, Alfred Schreuder, has said he doesn’t expect another star to leave this summer.

Antony was initially on Ten Hag’s summer wish-list as he looks for some attacking reinforcements following last season’s dismal shortfall. This situation has been muddied by Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit wish, but Ten Hag insists the superstar is still part of his plans.

There has been debate over whether Ronaldo would, or should, be allowed back into the side straight away if he does stay at United. The 37-year-old did not join Ten Hag's squad on their tour of Thailand and Australia due to family reasons.

Meanwhile, United’s attacking play in their four friendlies has looked superb. Jadon Sancho has come to the fore on the right flank while Anthony Martial looks like he’s restored his confidence and could be ready to fire again for United after a very poor 2021/22 season.

What may encourage Ten Hag most, though, is Marcus Rashford’s turnaround. The attacker was seen chasing down balls and putting in the hard yards during his outings in pre-season — something that was not evident last season.

He, Martial and Sancho have created a formidable trio partnership in the final third so far this summer. Rashford has shown his ability to cause havoc down the left wing as well as through the centre.

The England international scored twice during the tour, and played a big role in Matty Cash’s own goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw
