Manchester United might have found their midfield solution amid Liverpool FC transfer reports

Manchester United have now confirmed that Erik ten Hag will be their next permanent manager and will sign a three-year contract with the option to extend for a further year. Now attention will turn to who the club will sign in the transfer market to start the rebuild under the Dutch manager.

Multiple positions will need to be targeted, however, the one position that the club have desperately needed to address for over a season now is at defensive midfield. Nemanja Matic is the club's only natural defensive midfielder and he has announced that he will leave United on a free transfer at the end of the season.

A number of players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Declan Rice is of interest but is likely to be priced out of a move by West Ham United. Many fans have thrown one player in particular's name into the ring to replace Matic, Aurelien Tchouameni.

Tchouameni has been impressive both domestically and in Europe for AS Monaco this season and has been drawing attention from a number of Europe's top clubs. Chelsea, Real Madrid and United have all been linked with a move and given that Ten Hag wants physical and intelligent Champions League standard players, the 22-year-old French midfielder would fit the bill.

However, a spanner may have been thrown in the works, as The Times reported that Liverpool are seriously interested in signing Tchouameni and given that they have Champions League football, it may prove a hard sell for United. This may mean that the club will have to look to other targets.
