Manchester United might have a new transfer target thanks to Liverpool

It was a quiet window in terms of incomings for Manchester United last month, with no notable new arrival joining the club.

An inactive January isn’t unusual though for big clubs with the winter transfer window notoriously being a difficult one in which to land targets for a reasonable fee.

However, elsewhere in the Premier League there were some notable moves, particularly from some of United’s biggest rivals.

Manchester City brought in exciting youngster Julian Alvarez from River Plate, whilst Liverpool signed forward Luis Diaz from Porto.

Diaz had enjoyed a standout season in Portugal prior to his switch, netting 16 goals whilst registering a further five assists.

The 25-year-old is an accomplished wider attacker, hinting that he might have been brought in by Liverpool to replace one of Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah, both of whom are heading towards the twilight years of their careers.

Yet in the short term, those two are contracted at the club until at least next summer, as is Roberto Firmino whilst there’s also Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliot already tied down on long-term deals too.

This means it’s unlikely that we will see Liverpool recruit any more forward players in the next window. This could be crucial from a United perspective given the performances of one of the attackers heavily linked with a move to Anfield last year, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen.

Jurgen Klopp is said to be a huge admirer of the forward, and there was talk of Liverpool formalising a bid for the West Ham man in the summer. But the same never materialised, and the door could now be open for United to take advantage.
