Manchester United might be in the situation with their goalkeepers that Solskjaer wanted to avoid

It might be a difficult decision for Erik ten Hag as the start of next season approaches. Who does he want in goal, the goalkeeper who keeps making mistakes and doesn't fit his philosophy or the one who accused the club of lying to him just 12 months ago?

The debate over the relative merits and pitfalls of David de Gea and Dean Henderson might never end. It's hard to believe that 2023/24 could be another season in which the discourse around the two goalkeepers strikes up again.

It's a couple of weeks short of two years since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that the job share that they had effectively had going on in 2020/21 had to come to an end. They had both played more than 25 games that season and the situation wasn't really suiting anyone.

"At United most of the time we’ve had a No. 1 who has been playing most of the game," Solskjaer said before the final league game of that season.

"We brought Dean back to challenge David and he’s had a very good season. David flew home for the birth of his baby which gave Dean a longer run in the team and he really played well and established himself as a very good goalkeeper. He’s learnt a lot from it.

"But David is David, he’s really played well as well, he’s buckled down and really taken on the challenge. I’m really pleased with the two of them, it’s difficult to have that kind of rotation, you don’t rotate that much normally, I’ll have to find a solution for next year definitely."

In the end the solution was forced on Solskjaer yet, somehow, Ten Hag might be about to find himself in exactly the same position. You could say little has changed in two years.
