Manchester United might be considering the wrong German manager with Thomas Tuchel

"Manchester United have told me they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager," said Erik ten Hag in June.

Four months later and Thomas Tuchel could replace him at Old Trafford. The German is currently under consideration by United following an awful start to the season for Ten Hag.

United have made their worst start to a Premier League campaign, they sit 14th in the table and only Southampton have scored fewer goals, so the need for a change is obvious.

It's been obvious to anyone with a level head since the spring that Ten Hag needed to go and the majority of fans are now hoping Ineos take ownership of their mistake and sack him, as it has become clear his time is up and a new manager is required to take the club forward.

Who could replace Ten Hag has been debated since the FA Cup final and Tuchel's name has cropped up in most conversations since his meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco.

There are pros and cons with Tuchel. He has a proven record of winning trophies, he has managed elite clubs and is out of work, so he is attainable, but his most recent stint with Bayern Munich wasn't a success and he didn't get the United job in the summer for a reason.

There was a suggestion that Tuchel was unwilling to work in the parameters discussed with Ratcliffe but the landscape is different now and perhaps both parties will compromise.
