Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gives Marcus Rashford contract update

Erik ten Hag says Marcus Rashford intends to renew his Manchester United contract amid ongoing talks between the club and the forward.

By netting against Chelsea on Thursday, the 25-year-old became the first United player to reach the landmark since Robin van Persie 10 years ago. Club officials are still thrashing out a new deal for the attacker with the Reds confident an agreement can be reached.

Ten Hag is planning for Rashford - who has 12 months left on his current contract - to be part of his squad next season. "I expect Marcus Rashford to renew,” he told Viaplay. “He wants it. Manchester United wants it. He is a child of this club, so I assume this will happen."

Rashford is enjoying the most prolific season of his career, which included a League Cup final strike at Wembley and three World Cup goals for England.

22 of his goals for United have come since the mid-season break and as a result he has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season award. Ten Hag is delighted with the output from Rashford this campaign but wants his team as a whole to score more goals next season.

The United boss added: "I am happy that finally a player of Manchester United is able to score 30 goals again. But next year the numbers have to be higher."

After netting his 30th goal of the campaign, Rashford wrote on Instagram: “I want to thank the club and my teammates for helping make this personal achievement possible.

“After last season, when I struggled for form and fitness, I just wanted to get the feeling back of scoring goals and winning games and that's what has happened this year.
