Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag explains Jadon Sancho chat

Erik ten Hag feels Jadon Sancho has "made progress" in his second season at Manchester United.

Sancho started for the third match running in the 4-1 defeat of Chelsea and squared for Anthony Martial to put United 2-0 up.

Ten Hag beckoned Sancho over during the stoppage for Antony's injury in the first half and issued vehement instructions to the 23-year-old.

Sancho switched to the right after Antony's removal in the 29th minute and he was brighter in the area that United initially bought him to strengthen two years ago.

"I was not in discussions. I gave him some instructions," Ten Hag clarified. "There was an injury so I took the chance to give him some instructions. I do that often with the players.

"It is a short time and you have to take advantage to give some instructions to the team. Sometimes it can be individuals. Sometimes it can be groups. That is what he did.

"He did very well on the right. Played a very good game today. He is one of the players who has made progress this season. That is a good base to build further on.

"He can do both. He prefers to play on the left but we have seen today he is very good on the right as well."

Ten Hag is unsure if Luke Shaw, who came off at half-time with a back problem, will be available for the final Premier League game against Fulham on Sunday. Antony's season may be over after he sustained a serious ankle injury.

Tyrell Malacia could start in Shaw's place, Scott McTominay and Fred are pushing for recalls while Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are also in contention for starts.
