Manchester United interested in Monaco defender Axel Disasi as price tag set and more transfer rumours

Manchester United have 'stepped up' their interest in highly rated Monaco defender Axel Disasi but will have to pay more than £40million, according to reports.

Talks over a new centre-back have been ongoing around Old Trafford, with continued uncertainty over the futures of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Neither have been near the first-choice starting XI consistently this season and could look to leave United come summer.

The Reds have been monitoring Disasi throughout the season, with the 25-year-old recently called up to the French national team to replace the injured William Saliba - he has three caps to his name so far. And now the Daily Mail report that United's long-standing interest has intensified, with talks continuing over a potential summer move.

The report adds that United are one of several Premier League clubs eyeing the Monaco star, but any potential suitors will need to pay around £44million. Disasi has started all but one of his side's league games this season, predominantly at centre-back although he can also play at right-back.

Elsewhere, Calciomercato report that Rafael Leao faces two major contract 'obstacles' amid reported interest from United and several other clubs.

Leao's current deal with AC Milan is set to expire in the summer of 2024, with United reportedly among a number of clubs exploring an approach once he enters the final 12 months this summer. Reports in Italy suggest the winger does want to extend his stay at the San Siro, but faces two major problems in negotiating a new deal.
