Manchester United icon wants Premier League rule enforced that would have stopped Sir Alex Ferguson

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has suggested a rule that would limit the age of Premier League managers to 70.

Yorke's suggestion, if enacted, would have stopped Sir Alex Ferguson from winning his last Premier League title in 2013. His comments came after Roy Hodgson, who is 76, stepped down as Crystal Palace manager.

Hodgson was taken to hospital after falling ill during training last week, his second health scare this season after having previously fallen ill before Palace's match against Aston Villa in September. And Yorke believes the Premier League should introduce a rule stopping people over 70 from managing clubs.

"Roy Hodgson has been absolutely magnificent throughout his career and for what he has done in the game. From a personal point of view, young managers need to be given the chance,” he told Instant Casino.

“Roy needs to be respected for the work he has done but there comes a time where these managers over 70 years old need to be moved on.

“As players we have to retire and referees have to retire so managers should also be able to retire. I just feel like there should be a mandate and a cut off point when managers get to a certain age.

"I’m not saying these managers can’t be involved in football. Roy could be a director of football but if you’re a football manager at 70 years old… there should be a mandate in place.”
