Manchester United have two very different options to fill defensive-midfield role
If anything was learned after Manchester United's damp squib of an opening match day, is that their transfer business is not done yet.
Just like last year's first match of the new season, the shortcomings of the squad were clear against Wolves. It's a nice display of progress that United actually won this time around but it was a fortunate and undeserved result which didn't make any statement of intent for the campaign to come.
In another similarity to 2022, a defensive midfielder remains a prime area of concern in the 18 days remaining in the window. Erik ten Hag reacted to the defeats to Brighton and Brentford by ensuring a quality midfielder was signed and in came the transformative Casemiro.
Perhaps the Wolves win can be a catalyst for another arrival in the area. Though it's only week one, United's midfield setup did not look promising. Mason Mount has not hit the ground running and as he was under instruction to push up the field, Casemiro was left exposed and often had four opponents in his vicinity without help.

Wolves, a team whose manager only took charge five days before, gleefully cut through the side and created the third amount of chances in the league on match week one. Only newly promoted Luton and Sheffield United conceded more shots than the 23 United faced.
If it wasn't for a lack of cutting-edge and a fine debut from Andre Onana, there would be a real crisis at hand. But instead United have a win to build on but obvious flaws that need to be rectified.
