Manchester United have three starting positions up for grabs

In his pursuit of consistency, Erik ten Hag is looking to settle on an established side in the coming weeks. It is far easier said than done.

Manchester United have been plagued by injuries in the early parts of the season, hampering aspirations of creating a consistent style of play and preventing summer additions from settling in properly.

Ten Hag has had to chase short-term fixes at a time when he has been looking to lay long-term foundations. It is certainly a contributing factor as to why they have found it so difficult to put a string of positive results together.

The international break could come at the ideal time for United, given it will give injured players a chance to get themselves closer to match fitness and Ten Hag an opportunity to take a look at how he can fix the mess they find themselves in.

A key part of the transformation will be finding consistency in their selection and right now there appear to be three key roles up for grabs in the starting line up.

It is quite obvious that Andre Onana is the first choice in goal, Aaron Wan-Bissaka the leading candidate at right-back and Harry Maguire deserves to be starting in the middle.

Luke Shaw will return to the left-back role when he is back to fitness, but with Lisandro Martinez out until Christmas, a solution needs to be found in central defence.

Jonny Evans has been the first choice in recent weeks but has suffered an injury setback of his own. Raphael Varane has been poor all season and Victor Lindelof is inconsistent, quite clearly a backup at best.
