Manchester United have ignored Fred's warning with Ralf Rangnick decision

In 10 years' time we will all look back on Ralf Rangnick's spell at Manchester United as one of the weirdest footnotes in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

When he arrived in November following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, many fans were tricked into thinking that United had finally come up with a long-term plan. Rangnick was unveiled as the interim boss with United making it clear that he would move into a consultancy role at the end of the season.

What followed was, at first, a marginal improvement on the pitch, before the same old frailties in the United squad reared their ugly heads. There was some speculation at the beginning of 2022 that Rangnick may stay on to be the club's head coach on a permanent basis, but as soon as the Erik ten Hag rumours began, performances dropped and the German's chances of becoming manager had dissolved.

United scraped into the Europa League with a sixth place finish, but it was merely a consolation prize at the end of a historically poor Premier League campaign. Despite this there was still this semblance of a plan, with Ten Hag arriving and Rangnick moving into his much more preferred role upstairs.

Instead, just a week after speaking so positively about his new role, Rangnick was shown the door. This was yet more proof that United had lost sight of the long term vision which has worked so well for them in the past.
