Manchester United have dodged a bullet with Timo Werner transfer after Tottenham surprise

Scoring just two Premier League goals via their centre-forwards so far this season, it is increasingly obvious what Manchester United's priority should be in this month's transfer window.

After achieving a respectable third-placed finish in the Premier League last season, which was built on a solid defensive structure, United felt the addition of a big-money striker in the summer would elevate their position. However, their hopes of signing England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur failed to get off the ground.

Instead, United explored the opposite end of the spectrum when searching for a new goal-getter, signing Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £72million. Whereas Kane was prolific and proven, Hojlund was raw and inexperienced.

There is no doubting that the 20-year-old Dane has potential, but he was drafted in by Erik ten Hag during the summer to score goals and lead United's quest to build on last season's third-placed finish. Just past the halfway point of the campaign, Hojlund has just one Premier League goal to his name.

Though he plundered five goals in United's failed Champions League group stage campaign, proving that he knows how to finish, he has not been prolific enough in the league. That, however, has extended from his teammates not providing him with enough ammunition.

Hojlund's lack of competition has not helped, either. Though Marcus Rashford has, at times, been deployed centrally, Hojlund's only like-for-like competitor is Anthony Martial, who has also scored just once in the Premier
