Yet the reality is that even when Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment is ratified, time will already be running out for any meaningful changes to take place immediately. The Ineos group will conduct a sporting review of the current set-up and most likely look to get things in order behind the scenes before they go about rehauling the squad next summer.

It means that the upcoming transfer window could be one of departures rather than arrivals, with United's budget already stretched and the club wary of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Jadon Sancho is one of those who seems destined to leave next month. He remains frozen out amid his ongoing standoff with Erik ten Hag and will need to move clubs, or apologise, if he is to have any hope of playing football anytime soon.

The last time England played in the European Championship, he was brave enough to take a penalty in their shootout defeat. Next summer, he will most likely be watching from home, as has been his demise since moving to United after that heartbreak in the final.

United have already been without Sancho since August, so it is not as if his expected exit next month will see them accelerate plans to replace him either.

Adding a new forward to the squad remains a long-term ambition of the club, but in the case of replacing Sancho, they will most likely look for an internal solution until they can properly address the situation next summer.
