Manchester United hand Tottenham advantage in Sam Johnstone race and more transfer rumours

A return to Manchester United looks to be off the cards for Sam Johnstone as reports suggest Tottenham are set to win the race for the West Brom goalkeeper.

The England international had been linked with a move back to Old Trafford, having left United on a permanent move to The Hawthorns in 2018. With Dean Henderson’s future in serious doubt, the Reds could be in the market for someone to challenge David de Gea for the number one spot next season.

Johnstone looks to be on his way out at West Brom, with his contract expiring this summer and having been left out of the Baggies’ side during their final few games of the campaign. While a return to the Premier League is looking likely, it seems a move to Spurs is the more likely option.

The Mirror reports that Antonio Conte’s side are now the favourites to land the 29-year-old after United opted not to press ahead with their interest. Johnstone is said to feel that, with both De Gea and Henderson currently at the club, he needs to be closer to first-team action.

That will reportedly see Tottenham win the race, with Spurs looking for some quality back-up to Hugo Lloris, and someone to potentially replace the French World Cup winner. Lloris signed a deal to keep him in north London until 2024, but Johnstone could provide competition for his place next season should he complete the move.

Elsewhere, Juventus will reportedly sign Nemanja Matic this summer as he leaves United. The midfielder has already confirmed he will be one of a number of players departing Old Trafford at the end of the season.
