Manchester United great Teddy Sheringham responds to Man City winning treble

Teddy Sheringham thinks a game between Manchester United's treble-winning team of 1998/99 and the current Manchester City side would be a tight contest.

United became the first English side to complete a historic treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in '99, with the final trophy being won in dramatic circumstances against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

It's taken over two decades for that achievement to be equalled, but rivals City joined United in the history books this weekend when lifting the Champions League for the first time with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan.

Pep Guardiola's side also defeated United 2-1 in the FA Cup final on their way to completing the treble this season.

Sheringham, who decisively scored and assisted for United in the dying moments of the Champions League final in '99, has given his thoughts on the achievement being matched and he praised City for being a 'special team'.

In a Daily Mail column, Sheringham compared the achievements and also predicted a game between the two sides would be tight.

"With this City team, you almost felt it was inevitable because they’re that good. In all honesty, it’s a pleasure for our ‘99 team to be ranked alongside them as well as vice-versa because they’re phenomenal," Sheringham wrote.

"It doesn’t reduce our achievement whatsoever. Only special teams can do it. I watched the game last night and heard Pep Guardiola say how incredibly difficult it is to win the Treble. What we did was brilliant and the same goes for City this year.
