Manchester United favourite being played out of position is worse than it seems

In the spring, Aaron Wan-Bissaka played at left-back for Manchester United when it seemed like the best option was to play Diogo Dalot there, given his versatility and attributes.

Wan-Bissaka at right-back and Dalot at left-back would have been the selection of most fans in the circumstances, but Erik ten Hag thought differently and was coy when asked about the decision.

"I can't go too deep in that fact," said Ten Hag. "But they have both, of course, their skills, their contribution to the team, so we have a clear idea of what is ideally [the situation]. Sometimes, we have to adjust this but lately it has worked out very good, and we want to keep that consistency with Diogo and Garnacho on the right side because they have their connection.

"Also, Diogo, I know, has a very good connection with Antony. So, most of the times we want to keep such routines and that is why I chose lately for this partnership. To keep Diogo more on the right side and then, lately, Azza came in and did a very good job over on the left side."

Ten Hag explained as much as he could reveal and it seemed the thought process was that Dalot was performing so well on the right that it would be wrong to disrupt his rhythm.

Dalot has played at left-back during different stages of his career and is competent on that side, but Wan-Bissaka was chosen to play there for the first time in his career last season.
