Manchester United fans give shock verdict on whether Cristiano Ronaldo deserves new deal

More than half of Manchester United supporters who voted in a poll believe Cristiano Ronaldo should not be offered a new deal.

The Portugal megastar returned to Old Trafford on a two-year contract last summer. Ronaldo has netted 18 times for United this season and is subsequently the club’s top scorer.

However, some sections of the fanbase are unhappy with his perceived negative influence on the rest of the squad, with morale seemingly extremely low. Some suggest his playing style hampers the team's overall performance, with the 37-year-old known for his reluctance to press.

United have had a dismal season and look likely to miss out on a top-four finish. Criticism has been fired at Ronaldo over this, as well as other teammates such as captain Harry Maguire.

A poll ran by the Manchester Evening News shows that 52.2 per cent of voters do not want United to table Ronaldo a fresh deal. Just over 38 per cent want to see him pen a new contract while 9.5 per cent said they were unsure.

This is a quite damning set of results for Ronaldo, who was an overwhelming fan favourite during his first stint at Old Trafford. He undoubtedly will go down as one of the greats of the club but his 2021/22 homecoming has been far from ideal, judging by the poll.

There had been speculation circulating that the superstar could make an early exit from his current contract should United not qualify for next season's Champions League. However, these rumours have now died down, with one report even claiming that he has committed to seeing out his deal.
