Manchester United fans cannot agree on 'underwhelming' Kalvin Phillips transfer merits

Manchester United have now confirmed that Erik ten Hag will be their next permanent manager and will join in the summer after he has completed the season with Ajax. The manager will sign a three-year contract with the option to extend for a further year and his appointment will hopefully usher in a new era at Old Trafford.

With the manager now confirmed, United will begin to move forward with transfers. The club's task is now to identify a number of targets and press ahead on other deals with the approval of Ten Hag.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Kalvin Phillips is on United's list of targets to finally fill the hole that the team has had in defensive midfield all season. Leeds United look set to demand around £50m to 60m for the player's services.

The United fanbase, however, are split on whether they believe he would be the right choice. Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni are names that have been suggested by United fans for the position, but the former has been priced out of a move with West Ham slapping a £150m price tag on him and the latter is being chased by several elite clubs around Europe.

Some fans are also unsure on Phillips' price tag and his links to Leeds, with the rivalry potentially causing a rift before he has even joined the clubs. Others, though, think he would be a great signing.

The fanbase made their opinions known on social media. Here is just a selection of the responses from Twitter:
