Manchester United delay Mason Greenwood announcement

Manchester United have now decided not to announce a decision on Mason Greenwood's future before their opening Premier League fixture against Wolves on Monday.

Senior figures at United had intended to communicate the findings of their internal investigation into Greenwood "imminently" but it has now been delayed.

Club sources say United are nearing the end of a six-and-a-half-month investigation and entering a consultation phase with key stakeholders, including members of the United Women's team. Ella Toone, Mary Earps and Katie Zelem are on international duty with England at the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand while Aïssatou Tounkara and Estelle Cascarino are in the France squad.

The information will be handed over to chief executive Richard Arnold, who will make the final decision. A fans' group is planning to protest against Greenwood's possible reintegration into the squad at Old Trafford ahead of the Wolves match.

United maintain the decision on Greenwood will be objective and they are intent on settling on the right decision with clear communication. It is understood United regret setting a deadline for the announcement.

Greater Manchester Police announced on February 2 that Greenwood no longer faced criminal proceedings. Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood and United have conducted their own inquiries as they “determine the next steps”.
