Manchester United could unleash an attack with a point to prove vs Newcastle

The sight of Marcus Rashford enjoying a break in New York has received more attention than it probably deserves this week, but the fact the Manchester United forward was fit enough to jet off to the Big Apple would suggest he will be available this weekend.

Erik ten Hag will certainly be hoping he doesn’t have to conjure up a replacement in the way Gareth Southgate did over the international break. Southgate’s comments on not having Rashford available riled United fans after he was underused in the World Cup, although he has taken his game to another level since December.

Rashford would have been a certainty to start on the left for England against Italy and Ukraine, but he pulled out of an England squad for the fifth time after picking up a minor knock in the FA Cup fifth-round win against Fulham.

After three goals in the World Cup, the next challenge for Rashford is to make that position his own for his country and with Raheem Sterling out, this was an opportunity. He wouldn’t have dropped out of the squad lightly.

But he’s already ticked over 3,200 minutes this season and his club campaign is far from over. United could play another 19 games between Sunday and June 3 and if he’s fit Rashford will probably play in all of them.

The first of those comes at St James’ Park this weekend, a match that could briefly drag United back into the battle for fourth if it doesn’t go their way. Win and they will pretty much put any lingering chance of falling out of the top four to bed.

So Ten Hag will want Rashford in his side for that fixture. His fitness will be the major talking point when the Dutchman conducts his media duties later this week.
