Manchester United could sign Frenkie de Jong's perfect midfield partner for free

Manchester United need midfield reinforcements this summer. The club don't have a defensive midfielder and they also need to replace Paul Pogba; this should be the main priority in the transfer market to help Erik ten Hag succeed at Old Trafford.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United have been in contact with Barcelona about the possibility of signing Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder played under Ten Hag at Ajax and it seems that the manager wants to be reunited with him as he looks to seriously upgrade the midfield area.

Though replacing Pogba is important, United will have no defensive midfielders once Nemanja Matic departs in the summer and De Jong does not solve this problem. But his perfect midfield partner could be signed for free if United look in the right place.

Some of De Jong's best games at Barcelona have come playing next to Sergio Busquets, who is a defensive midfielder who thrives on his ability to position correctly to stop attacks and also in possession. Therefore if United want to replicate these conditions they should also look for a midfielder who is good on the ball and can handle a lot of the team's build-up going through him.

Boubacar Kamara currently plays for Marseille but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, he would be available on a free transfer. According to Fabrizio Romano, United were offered the chance to sign the 22-year-old midfielder in January for little as £10m, but as Ralf Rangnick has revealed in his most recent press conference; the club decided not to make any signings in the winter window.
