Manchester United close to £26m transfer window windfall after deal agreed

Manchester United have accepted a bid of £26.7m from Marseille for Mason Greenwood but the move is dependant on the forward agreeing personal terms with the Ligue 1 club.

The deal for Greenwood will see United bank an initial fee of £23.3m, with a further £3.4m in add-ons, while a large sell-on clause has also been inserted into the deal, believed to be around 40% to 50%. Greenwood has now been given permission to speak to Marseille and undergo a medical.

A number of Italian clubs had previously expressed an interest in Greenwood, with Juventus, Napoli and Lazio all making enquiries about the 22-year-old, but it is Marseille who have emerged as surprise frontrunners.

Greenwood hasn't played for United since January 2022 and on Monday he returned to Carrington for talks with the club's new football leadership team, including sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, where it was made clear a permanent exit this summer was the priority.

Marseille supporters have protested against the potential signing of the United forward. A statement issued on OM Forum said: "At a time when negotiations for the arrival of Mason Greenwood are announced as becoming increasingly heated, it seems necessary to explain, once again and before the damage becomes irreversible, why this transfer seems inconceivable in view of the values displayed by the club and why it would mean for many of us a red line that would irreparably damage the passion that we have for this club."
