Manchester United can use £30m bargaining chip for complicated Harry Kane transfer

Harry Kane added two more goals to his now-record England tally during the March international break and Manchester United are expected to test his resolve when the market reopens.

However, as Manchester City discovered, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a fearsome negotiator and the proposed blockbuster move is fraught with complication. Levy won his last boardroom battle with potential buyers from Manchester and United will have to box clever to land their preferred target to replace Cristiano Ronaldo to spearhead their attack season.

Even with only 15 months left to run on his contract, there is a general understanding that Levy remains in the driving seat and Kane - with goals against Italy and Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifiers - might have added one or two pounds to his fee over the last few days.

Other factors are at play when it comes to United chasing Kane, though, even if you can somehow discount Levy from the situation. Tottenham might not be willing to play ball with another Premier League club, while Kane himself might instead prefer to seek out a new challenge with Bayern Munich for example.

But having become Tottenham and England's record marksman in little over seven weeks, Kane has made no secret of his desire to surpass Alan Shearer at the Premier League summit. Kane is only 56 shy and, despite one or two suggestions to the contrary, has time on his side before turning 30 this summer.

As that man Ronaldo proved, there is nothing stopping Kane from hitting new levels or, at least, maintaining his current standards over the next few seasons. He has certainly shown no sign of dwindling at the top-level as his yearning for silverware ultimately preserves
