Manchester United can trial new Hannibal Mejbri role for Erik ten Hag

After three defeats in their last four Premier League games, the last rites have been administered to Manchester United's season.

Rarely has the conclusion to a campaign for United felt more underwhelming. The last international break of the season was supposed to act as a "reset", according to Ralf Rangnick, but there have been four points from a possible 15 since then and the abject misery has continued.

Defeat to Everton was wretched but the humiliation has continued at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal. A third successive defeat looks inevitable when Chelsea visit Old Trafford on Thursday.

There is almost a month of the season left to go, but United will play only four times — two of the games before the end of the Bank Holiday weekend. Their final OId Trafford fixture is three weeks before the season finishes and there will be no lap of (dis)honour this season.

There is nothing left to salvage from this season and players and fans are desperate for it to end. Rangnick's awful spell as interim manager is coming to an end and he has nothing to gain long-term, but the final 360 minutes of the season should at least be good for experimenting.

It will feel like a waste of an opportunity if United fans don't at least see 17-year-old winger Alejandro Garnacho from the bench once or twice before May 22, given he has been an unused substitute for the last three games. Garnacho is a hugely exciting talent and this is a chance to dip his toe in the water, but regular first-team action under Erik ten Hag next season is still unlikely given the stage of his development.
