Manchester United can sign £25m Frenkie de Jong alternative for Erik ten Hag

The Manchester Evening News understands that Manchester United are interested in bringing Frenkie de Jong to the club in order to reunite him with manager Erik ten Hag. However, the situation may not be as simple as Barcelona want to sell the player and the club are in a position to buy him.

Barcelona are looking to sell the midfielder to solve their financial situation but it seems the player does not want to leave. De Jong told Dutch outlet AD.nl while on international duty: "I did talk with Xavi about next season, but that was just about football, about the squad and what is needed to improve. I understand that [my sale could help the team]. But the club didn't tell me anything.

"They didn't propose anything to me, so I am assuming that nothing is going on. I have never felt regret regarding choosing Barcelona, definitely not. Barcelona is the club of my dreams, it has been since I was a kid."

United are not in the Champions League next season and though the expectation is that the club will do better under Ten Hag, there is no guarantee, so De Jong is going to have to be convinced. But if he can't be swayed to swap sunny Barcelona for Manchester, then who else could the club look to sign?

According to the Italian outlet RaiSport, United and Arsenal are both interested in signing Fabian Ruiz from Napoli this summer. The Spanish midfielder's contract expires in 2023 and therefore the Italian club are looking to cash in on the player while they still can.
