Manchester United are playing a dangerous game in Frenkie de Jong transfer chase

They say Rome wasn't built in a day but they had probably laid some of the bricks after a couple of weeks, whereas Manchester United are yet to make a move in the transfer window.

It's been a worryingly slow start to a summer that was supposed to herald yet another massive rebuild at United. Erik ten Hag has been in the hot seat for over a month but he is yet to have been handed any new additions, leading to envious glances from United fans in the direction of Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham who have all strengthened considerably already.

There's no need for panic just yet. Unlike those three clubs which are all settled with managers who no doubt had long-set plans for exactly what they wanted to add to their squad this summer, United have gone through a lot of change over the last few weeks in coaching positions but also throughout the club hierarchy. It's of little surprise that things have been slow as a result.

United have at least been aiming for the right targets even if they have been unable to hit them. The fact they were interested in Darwin Nunez before Liverpool won the race with ease shows that the calibre of player they're aiming for remains high despite their current lowly stature. Another such target is Frenkie de Jong.

It's understood that Ten Hag has identified his fellow Dutchman as the perfect player to help stamp his identity quickly on to his new squad and it would be quite the coup for United, with De Jong possessing a passing range, elegance on the ball and tactical acumen that none of their other midfielders has.
